This "late" Picture of the Week is taken near the "new" Area B on the Combat Range 1 Deadlock map, which has just gone through its 3rd Iteration internally. It's really exciting for us to slowly materialize where we'll soon be fighting each other in tense close quarter tactical combat!

If you thought that the ITO Zero Environment Combat Suit would forever be one size fits all, well think again! :) We've internally started iterating on tons of various Interstellar Marines customization options, which will allow us all to personalize our preferred outfit within the standards of the ITO Special Forces.

Everybody that's been following the Open Door Development of Deadlock, knows that we're taking "this" to a whole new level and although we've shown a bit of level design using the modules we created during Running Man; This image shows how we've envisioned the training modules to look like in their next iteration, illustrated beautifully by our very own Master ScribbleHEAD! :)

Although it's not on the top of our current "to do" list, we're really looking forward to implementing the tactical PDA; which features loads of interesting tactical gameplay and options. Here you have the PDA in one of its early proof-of-concepts and if you can guess the game in the background, I'll work naked, all day tomorrow! .. (not really) :)

Yesterday I booted up our old Publisher demo (first time in a long time) to show ScribbleHEAD some of our early ideas and environments. Nostalgia struck and I just had to post a screenshot from the Carcharodon Carcharias Scanning Areas deep inside Orbital Research Station Xeno-13. (It's "Magazine" not "Clip" :))

First vegetation test on one of our artificial cave maps (previously used to test a toggle-able day and night lighting prototype). Thanks to the power of Unity, we've been able to get a good head start on environment vegetation, after purchasing a few cool packages in the Unity Asset Store and we're all pretty excited about the potential detail and variety it presents our environments.

We're finally back from vacation, booting things up with a special Picture of the Week, from the magic hand of Mr. Jesper Andersen (Aka ScribbleHEAD) which have sent us a few concept tests, based his interpretation of our Art Direction for the artificial caves of ITO Training Grounds. We love all his ideas and are very much looking forward to iterating the concept further in close cooperation with what is already established by Mr. Von Cotta.

Nostalgia-trip; three initial pistol concepts I did (hence the low quality) back in 2003 when Nics, Gert and I was slowly getting started. From left stable, 3-round burst and high caliber models. Heavily inspired by real-life counterparts, can you guess which?

A while back we where invited to "play" terrorist & hostages in a training session of the Danish Frogman Corps (Our version of the US Navy SEALs). Besides getting a proper reality check that we'll never forget, we also got the chance to study various cool equipment, including this Reflex Sight; This is how sights in games should look like! :)

We've shown a bit of unpolished work-in-progress from Deadlock recently .. so this week we've decided to post an old screenshot from onboard ITO's orbital research station Xeno-13, because we feel it provides a decent representation of the kind of polish we're going for in both Deadlock and IM in general. (The screenshot is from our old engine but could might as well have been from Unity and also reveals one of our old badly designed shark creature iterations)

Back when our team included concept artists they could always play around with the shark creature concept, if e.g. idling. This iteration (we called it "chicken legs") was spawned by our beloved Mr. Munk to great amusement on the team ... and actually inspired ideas centered around the fact that, maybe not all creature fabrications is perfect all the time. (Like they say: "Don't *beep* with mother nature")!

Each time we start work on a new environment for the game (in this case a scientific medical center) we immediately try to define the look and feel of the environment by creating an initial Moodboard by "borrowing" various research images. This allows everybody assigned to materialize the environment to be on the same page before the real conceptualizing begins.

No one is happy to not see huge bare breasts bouncing about?

This game is somewhat centered on realism, so I find it refreshing that the female models are appropriately attired and ready for combat. As they should be.

I don't know what you guys are all up and about with the absence of Lara Croft modeling/concept.

I personally would much rather have the feel of realism and would honestly let my face enjoy a good ol' palm if I find myself gunning down sharks and a female marine runs by in a bikini...

this looks sweet and the pistol looks interesting but I hope it´s useful in combat because it looks too good to lay all the time in my pockets. (p.s. the suits are cool and the shark crature is impressive I hope that you get it so creepy that I get a cold shiver down my spine everytime I see it)

I absolutely love the art style on the concept sketches.

Who draws them (if it is indeed only one person)?

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

So, since there's clearly a male and female marine, are we going to get to 'make' our own characters? Switch up the face or armor designs, similar to Halo: Reach? I want a skull on my helmet! :D

Badge

@mman36:
We'll give you plenty of options to customize your marine! Its important to differentiate each player in a coop party as well as allow for some cool bragging incentives. Keep it clean! :)

@Saijin_Naib:
Most of our older concept art was created by our beloved concept artist Andreas Von Cotta (unfortunately he works at CCP at moment) .. check out his sites where he've posted more IM concept, which we'll be sharing here later! :)

Do you mean ITO AI "SARA"

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Couple errors in newest pic text.

ITO AI 'SARA' has Genetic Research under complete security lock-down, trapping all survivors and allowing all virus infected scientists to kill everybody still alive on-board orbital research station X13!

fixed :)

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

And... just realized the greater implications of said text. Virus-infected scientists you say? Interesting...

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

@Aevaris,

I know, the plot thickens...

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

The concept art is very good kudos to the artist, but if i may, i don't know if i like this new plot bit, it is very RE like. IMO you guys should stick to genetic research on dangerous animals (don't use sharks only) and leave the Virus, zombie stuff.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

@Argoon Well, tbh, the most dangerous "animal" are microbes. And microbes are FAARRR easier to manipulate than full blown animals. And faaarrr harder to defend/defeat. But I do agree that it is a subject matter that, if followed, needs to be somehow unique. Else we have nothing more than a fancy L4D mod.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Yes you are right that virus are the first critter that any good scientist messes about and it is logic that the scientists on the IM universe would make use of virus and stuff, but that is the problem, aggressive zombie making virus is used to much on other games and movies, i have seen that before, what i never saw in any game or film was landsharks and thats why IM is unique to me in that regard. Maybe they could use the virus in other unique ways them zombie, like virus that can corrode metal at a very fast rate (destroying guns, armor and the titan walker) or even kill a person (in some bloody way) in seconds, etc. To me if they can make a shark walk on land they can make any mismatch of any big and dangerous animal.

But this is only my opinion and i believe ZPS will give some kind of twist to the scientist zombie plot.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Since ZPS has been revolutionizing in many ways with almost everything they have been doing I would not be suprised at all if they take the virus plot and make it unique. And who knows it might not even be zombies they're referring to, and if they are why not zombies are cool. And if ZPS does do zombies Im sure it would be some of the best zombies around.

Also when are we going to see Phase 2 of FPS evolved? IF there is going to be a Phase 2...

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Yeah, it might not be zombies. Maybe the virus actually makes the host stronger, faster etc without turning it into a mindless zombie. Anything's possible with a virus. GREAT concept art though!

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

looking better and better each week!

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Indeed. Although bordering unrealistic, viruses can do more than anything else. I mean, were talking more than radiation, bacteria, humans, etc. Viruses could potentially cause true mutations, unlike any of the others because viruses can introduce new DNA and, maybe, remove old DNA. Which nothing else can do.

More like a fixed range AGOC type extension which gives the player a representation of the effective range of the slug rounds.

Badge

Lovely shotgun!

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Very nice concept art :)
I know it doesn't have a buttstock on right right now but i do believe I wouldn't use a scope without one. Otherwise the recoil would send the shotgun into my face.
Are we going to be able to choose what kind of shell we fire? Such as choose whether to use pellet rounds, slug rounds, or mix and match them?

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

Shotgun with a scope? i wasn't expecting that. Looks nice.

Badge

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

@madmule and dracogas It is actually a scary thought. Because of the high oxygen content, a flamethrower would just explode down corridors. They would be extremely effective weapons on a space station.

Good thought/comment.

@ aevaris would there be a possiblibily the flame from the flame thrower might get too hot and start burning parts of the users body and/or clothing?

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dmE-emrrAs

The Marines of World War II didn't seem to have that problem haha. Although, it is true that because of the higher oxygen content in the air(assuming most of the air in the space station/ship is almost pure oxygen or recycled), there would be a bigger flame. I would think a flamethrower is still usable though, seeing as the flame is projected away from the user regardless.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

true and i wonder what type of fuel the flamethrowers would use since the fuel they use now is a mixture of gas and diesel

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 6 months ago

@MadMule I am not 100% sure, but I would expect that the flame would still be useable, just more dangerous a weapon. And with the proper tweaking for space ship/station use, it could be quite a deadly little bugger :-P

Maybe instead of making the IM: Prologue slice playable, have it as a comic. Tells a story and is probably cheaper. I'm sure we'll have enough slices to know what gameplay is like by the time we hit Prologue.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

@dracogas I've been trying to make an Interstellar Marines comic cover for fun! It's not done though... but interesting idea you have there.

@Aevaris It looks to me like the Unreal footage but it could have maybe just been the same HUD. I kind of was disappointing they got rid of the slight fog in the helmet when you run, I hope they put it in later.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

@Adidas25 & luthreidrome After doing some thinking, I realized due to the age of that picture (note the 2007 copyright), it must have been the Unreal engine. So, to answer your question Adidas, it is ingame footage, but a different engine. As such, the exact game will not necessarily look exactly like that, but will look either identical or very similar. Especially static images such as blood on walls and such, I don't expect that to change at all.

Badge

Observant Aevaris, never thought of looking at that. from what I've seen of the features of Unity''s new update, Unity 3, it's going to look even better due to all the new features. Physx, beast lightmapping, etc. Here's a link for those that haven't checked it out.

Hi pgomid and welcome! The game is still in development and the release date is TBD (to be determined). For now, you can play the demo's/alpha's of runningman and bullseye. The next slice/demo/alpha will be released soonish.

Badge
Avatar

Hi
Whether the project is heavy?
Or is difficult to work with Unity?

Sorry if my English is a little weak.

Thanks

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

The project is being developed by a 4 man team, so you can expect updates and more 'demos' or slices.
The team knows what they're doing with Unity, however, since the team is small, slices take several months to make.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

Indeed, as dracogas says the team right now is only 4 people, as this project got hit a little bit when the economy crashed this year/last year and the team had to drop from 20ish to 4. However, they are fundraising and getting investors currently and things seem promising. Once they have secured investors, the team we will re-expand back to their old 20ish people in size and things will be booming as far as development goes.

I dunno how hard the unity engine is to work with. I know the recent release of unity3.0 made the teams job ALOT easier. Because unity2.0 was missing alot of things that the team had to makeup for and code by hand. However, unity3.0 has these missing elements and so the team does not have to code a lot of the special effects by hand and can go back to concentrating on the game itself.

3 hours for the bake!! The emissive materials must be the culprit there.

IMO If you guys have to wait 3 hours to see the light setup of every level them is better if you use dynamic light only, Unity has a deferred shader render (as you guys know) so you can use as many dynamic lights as you want (if they aren't shadow casting lights there is) with clever lighting placement you can have 1 or max 4 shadow casting lights per room and use the rest to simulate bounced lighting, this was how Frictional Games lighted their Amnesia game and it looked very well lighted, Real time Ambient Occlusion is also a very good way to minimize the need for shadow casting lights, and the best is that you don't need to sacrifice low end GPU's with this lighting method.
But you guys are the ones that are making the game so if 3 hours for light baking is something that you are able to accept them go for it, who am i to say other wise.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

@Argoon

I like you style and trust me in terms of our long term ambitions regarding the light of IM, we've already made several attempts at creating "staged" dynamic global illumination which makes your fantastic feedback right up our ally.

Toggle and fade-able lightmaps controlled by the amount of light in a area, fake GI (pre-placed and dynamically spawned lights near emmisive and illuminated materials, electrical system which groups light-sources and power-boxes as well as a few other cool tricks and features .. its still early days but damn light is FTW! :)

Hey pgomid3000, there are a lot of videos in the media section if you want to check those out, but no, there is no official trailer for the game yet.

As to your first question, I don't understand what you are asking about, so could you restate or give more details of what you are looking for?

Badge

Hi and thanks for your reply
My first question

Why does the environment the details?
I'm hoping to be able to, get what I mean!
My English is a little weak.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 5 months ago

Do you mean to ask what are the details of the game's environment? We will just have to wait and see mainly. But, the little we've seen was that there is a level aboard a spaceship, a level underground, and a level in the shark breeding facility. As to what else, that remains to be seen.

If I still missed your question, I apologize, I am trying though :)

The new textured female marine model looks terrific, but shouldn't the chest area of the amour, be moved forward a little, it looks like the breast is being compressed, and in real life that can't be comfortable. Of course i need to see the model from the side, but in pic 0002, the chest area of the female seems to be the same as the male.

Badge
Avatar

1 year, 3 months ago

Do you mean that there is a special formed armor is necessary which gives the breast more place and more wear comfort? I personally don't think there is such a difference. Just Google for "Woman Bulletproof Vest" and look some pictures. :)

Badge

I just seemed to notice, the shark creature's textures looked a little symmetrical, try not to use a lot of symmetry for that will kill the realism. I am trying not to complain but I just want this game to be the very best it can be, keep working, it is looking great!

Concerning PotW #0022: <3 the reference to Nordic Mythology, and, I was wondering, is there anything just visible in the shadows waiting to pounce on the marines? Just wondering if I missed anything, cheers on the awesome pic.

Haha, thanks for the intro MadMule, for the sake of the comments here (and the fact they dont allow hyperlinks), I can only do the full greeting on the forums (which I highly encourage any new folks to check out, its much more lively there :-P)

But indeed, this new pic is absolutely awesome and welcome to all newcomers :D

It's good to see a female character in a game wearing practical armor and not suffering from, as the doctors call it, football boobs.

Will there also be a option to play as different races?

The pictures are very detailed, it seems those who make 3d models seem to be some specialists. It seems that the whole team is a specialist team

I took my first <a href="http://goodfinance-blog.com/topics/mortgage-
loans">mortgage loans</a> when I was not very old and this supported my relatives a lot. However, I need the short term loan over again.
