Something I wanted to ask right from the start, so why not know?

Who here has played StarWars: Republic Commando?

Yeah, I know, StarWars but that game is something special in so many ways, you should check it out. And it's probably the most not-StarWars-like StarWars Game ever :-)

  • it's brutal (lots of blood, limb-severing, ...)
  • it has a (awesome) custom soundtrack, including licensed soundtrack
  • it's tactical
  • it focuses on the military. No half-demi gods / jedis / stupid little teddies

And now the real reason for you to check it out. It's the game I was thinking of immediatly when first learning about Interstellar Marines. In fact, I though "this could be RC in perfection". RC shares many concepts and ideas, even the helmet that get's blood all over it. You play the leader of a four-man squad and have to lead them through three seperate campaigns that take place at the start, the middle and the end of the Clone Wars.

Anybody familar with it? Anybody interested in it after reading this post?

I played it before, so long ago though. I know Lucas Arts recently joined Steam, and one of the games they added to Steam was Republic Commando. I recall it's pretty cheap there aswell.

I adored that game. It used to be my favourite, but got replaced by Prototype lol. I just loved everything about it.

I still adore it. Replaying in once a year on my PC. But replaced by Prototype? That's not only a game with some flaws but a non-shooter?

You're right, LA released it on Steam too.

Everybody, go check it out!

Prototype has flaws but really appeals to me. And I don't only play shooters. ^^

Prototype became repetitive too fast for me, and I thought the history was put together in a weird way.

Prototype had a pretty interresting idea...but yeah the gameplay became very repetitive...and the story was very very weak as well i think

But...it was kinda fun to run around and create chaos :)

As for republic commando...I do remember trying it out way back when it was released...maybe I should get a copy on steam as I do remember it as being pretty good. But damn steam and their one euro=one dollar...

Prototype became repetitive too fast for me, and I thought the history was put together in a weird way.

I really liked all of it, story, gameplay and presentation combined. Spent ages completing the Web of Intrigue and found this really deep story, the gameplay itself is just incredibly fun and the presentation, graphics, density, sounds, etc, combined was just fantastic. It was a game that just "clicked" for me and when I finished it, I felt like I'd been on a great adventure, which is something I very rarely get from games, let alone open world games. I connected to all the characters, especially Alex, I adored the depth of the story and the universe it created, the gameplay was just tons of fun and deep enough to not get repetitive for me personally, and the presentation, although the graphics weren't the best, I thought was incredibly well done.

But to each his own.

Continuing on to Interstellar Marines, I get kind of the same feeling. The story seems so fantastically deep, the gameplay looks extremely deep and fun and the presentation, combined with the gameplay, looks so spot on, making for a very immersive experience. I never liked GRAW, but this looks to be one of my favourite games of all time, IF ZPS don't stray from the path and just keep focused on fulfilling their vision for the game and delivering an extremely fun and polished experience, then it is guaranteed to be one of my top ten games. The co-op experience makes it just that much more fun and the very fact that I'm financially involved in the making of the game just makes me even more excited for it. When it's finally released, and if it's great, then I will feel like I'd been on a very fun adventure.

Then I will wait another 10 years for the sequel. :p

I am not going to comment on the Prototype issue because this is the Republic Commando thread.

Yeah, 8,99 is damn cheap, pick it up. You get a great game for sure. Enlisting at IM was more expensive and it was risky ;-)

Republic Commando was awesome. They did a really good job with the atmosphere, the back and forth troop chatter was especially good. The ending was a bit frustrating tho, it seemed like things started taking too long to kill after a while. I can't really say that I am a Star Wars fan, but the FPS's attached to that IP are usually really good.

As far as prototype was concerned, I really enjoyed the beginning, but as the game dragged on it started to bug me more and more. It seemed like half of the content was there SOLELY to stop people from saying "this game is too short". I collected all of the web of intrigue as well, and got annoyed at them about 2/3 of the way through. At first, they did wonders for the atmosphere of the game, but then you started getting almost-repeats. I guess what I am saying is that the WoE would have been more effective with less targets, IMO.

I guess my part of my criticism is based around me being burned out on sandbox games these days. Most of them seem like they could have been a fairly linear experience, and the open world doesn't add much more than being able to strew minigames and forced exploration (hidden packages, etc) throughout the environment.

True. Caught me in the act, you did. Damn you steam!

I am playing it through - the Boss mentioned it at some point in the past and since I missed it I thought I would take the chance and run through it - taking notes and screens on ideas that IM can iterate on. I am fascinated by their ease of control on commanding their battle brothers and hope this ease can be transitioned to IM.

Lets see if you agree on the following:

What I like so far...

  1. The script was fun and entertaining ... gave the characters life.
  2. Vertical enemies ( so fun to pick them off when they were hanging from some wall)
  3. The 'group' dynamic - orders/breaching/healing etc. They still feel a lot scripted, but it has potential.
  4. A choice when you are wounded. To bad you can't use your pistol while you are down.
  5. Immersion - helmet, seeing your hand interact with the environment (even though the body snaps ... it's acceptable)
  6. AI of the team - they rarely get in your way and yet they are always visible. They seem to be doing their share of damage and don't feel invulnderable. Or maybe I have been lucky :D

What I like not so much...

  1. The weapons (especially the peashooters blaster ... i find it faster to kill things in close combat!) Feels like playing Fire Warrior again ... usch!
  2. Room-to-room scripted levels. I admit I am not a complete addict to open world games, but something inbetween so there are meaningful, comprehendable tactical choices to be made as you approach an objective.
  3. No feeling of being 'hit'. You loose health/shield to drastic and the ammo/medic areas are always around the corner. This results in a no-fear state where I can always reload/heal up. In IM, I imagine if you get a bad start, you will have to make the best of it for the duration of the mission! Stop whining!
  4. The group was too 'over styled'. I would probably have toned their 'class' down a bit. But that's just me.

Did I forget anything?

/ Windfeld

PS: No spoilers! I am not through RC yet!

Steam. <3

I have another negative thing about the game, to add to the list. Most people have widescreen monitors today, but RC does not support it.

I think your impressions are spot on, Windfeld. I couldn't really get into such detail because it has been a while since i have played, but from what I remember of the game, I find myself agreeing with every point.

P.S. You played Fire Warrior? It's good to know I'm not the only one that suffered through that. At least GW is handing their IP's to reputable companies these days.

I never said it was perfect but it's really damn good. And as I said, full of ideas that you could forge into perfection. Hey Winfield, am I credited somehow now? Like "Source of good game recommendations" ;-)

I actually excuse many of the mentioned flaws because it's a originally an Xbox shooter and therefore has to follow one stupid law: BE LIKE HALO And with a really great AI and brilliant animations (I've never seen so many different death animations), as well as a script written by a genius and awesome music at the right set piece moments am willing to forgive its few shortcomings.

The weak main blaster is actually an interesting discussion subject since it's not there for no reason. It feels pretty odd pumping a whole magazine into your enemies, sure but it also enforces this team dynamic of taking down enemies along with your fellows, especially the bigger ones. Republic Commando is probably at it's best when played on the highest difficulty level.

Star Wars: Republic Commando was one of the most interesting tactical-shooters of last generation, and a worthy addition to Star Wars-themed games catalog. Shame it has problems with bump-mapping on GeForce 8xxx and higher ones...I'd like to replay it, because I didn't finish it back in a day.
