Okay, what's going on, people?

If somebody knows it's not true, don't tell me. I kind of enjoy that hope rush.

Rock Paper Shotgun did a little article on that yesterday, and the vagueness of the presentation sure has the commenters skeptical.

That's impossible, can't be real! But then again..

Results 1 - 10 of about 2,040,000,000 for google. (0.48 seconds)

That too is impossible.

The cool part of this kind of tech (if real) is that you could potentially import geometry using a laser scanner.

Which they mentioned like 2-3 times in the videos? :3

So basically, this is a very advanced culling algorithm based around using points instead of polygons?

Interesting..

I like the idea of importing through laser scans, it would kill 3D modeling and add real-life scenery. You'd put up some hollywood-like-ish scene, scan it and boom! Can you imagine?

Duke Nukem blowing up your backyard furniture!

Okay 3D modeling wouldn't be killed as you'd still need to put things together and make the final touch on things..

All I think of when I hear lazer scanning is this:

Laser Import

Yeah, I think if you were doing a game that has any kind of roots in reality, it would be vastly easier to make all of your props. Dunno about sets, as the cost might outweigh just generating one. Maybe they would scan scale models?

Just think about this though - how many times do you think mundane items have been remade for games over the years? Coffee cups, bottles, toilets, etc? If that takes off, some smart individual should probably make some kind of common geometry library, like they do with sound libraries. There would be no polygon limits so you wouldn't have to worry about them working within the limits of different games, right?

Have you guys ever worked with LiDAR data? I honestly don't see how this would work properly.

LiDAR point clouds are massive, slow, and just ugly data to work with. I'd have to see how they are working with compressing and making surfaces out of the data to believe what they are trying to push.

It is borderline impossible to extract surfaces and objects from LiDAR point clouds accurately...

That is precisely why there is so much skepticism for this tech. They put out a few demo videos but there is no in-depth scientific/technical explanations present.

Hey, if they figured something out then FANTASTIC for them. The implications of this would reach far beyond games as it would also fall into Remote Sensing/GIS/Environmental Science/etc and would certainly make some of my tasks easier :P

I really hope its real, but I honestly don't see how.

My university works on technology like these and I can asure you, it is real. We have already come a lot farther than the video even implies.

May I ask what university Vidmaster? What are they using to extract objects from the point cloud? Object Oriented classification approaches or something else?
