Name : Thomas Candela
Nickname : Tank
Age : 31
Rank : Corporal
Physical appearance : Caucasian (probable Russian ancestry), black eyes, very short black hair, 1m90 (6'3'') for 95kg (210lb). His face is one of the rare parts of his body to not be scarred. His left arm and shoulder were burned twelve years ago, and his skin is darker and has a strange aspect there.
Armour : Experimental powered armour. Originally meant to fill the gap between Walkers and Marines, they only begin to be used in real combat situation to test their performances. The subject was chosen due to is high strength and constitution, allowing him to manipulate the armour with more ease.
It offers a better protection than standard armour, stopping most (non-anti-armour) bullets. It also allows the user to carry heavier weapons and more gear, and is equipped with advanced sensors, like thermal camera, light amplifier and radiation detectors. Its theoretical autonomy, thanks to its B- battery, is eight years in passive mode. A full use will discharge the accumulators in two hours. However, the increased mass slows down movement and prevent silent movement. While it is still possible to use standard weapons, its thicker gloves will make it far more difficult and prevent any precise fire.
Primary weapon : A modified light machine gun, equipped with standard removable grenade launcher and red dot, a standard scope is generally carried as well for longer ranges. The powered armour allows the subject to use it more as an assault rifle, but its mass (and the one of the armour) will make it clumsy at point-blank range, and such combat situation should be avoided.
Secondary weapon : A modified automatic bullpup shotgun. This weapon is also experimental, designed to give a high-power side arm to go with the powered armour. With a fire rate of 120 shot/minute, 8 shells magazines and the curious bullpup design, it is a tricky weapon to use. More adapted to close quarter combat than the LMG, when used with one hand it is very difficult to hit a target further than at point-blank range, even helped by the powered armour.
Knife : Surprisingly, he doesn't use the larger version of the combat knife developed for the powered armour, but instead chose a machete kept from a previous mission in a jungle. Previous officers tried to dissuade him to do so, without success so far.
The strength and mass of the powered armour compensate the loss of agility, and the subject revealed to be a formidable unharmed (or machete-armed) fighter with it during training, but a combat situation involving hand-to-hand combat is improbable, as a hypothetical opponent could easily flee.
The subject also carries two offensive hand grenades and a defensive hand grenade. This one should be used carefully, as more lightly armoured friendlies may be caught in the lethal radius.
The request of the subject for a shoulder gun controlled by eye movement was refused for budget and feasibility reasons.
Background : The subject was born in Europe (precise location unknown), and was raised in at least three different European states. At the age of thirteen, he emigrated to Mars with his family, and began working there at the age of eighteen in a private security company. At the age of twenty-eight and after six years in an assault team, he left the company for unknown reasons.
Rumours say that he punched a staff officer in the face, but he never made any comment about it.
He subsequently returned to Earth and joined the European army, affected to a special assault team six months later. His nickname 'Tank' comes from an episode where entrenched enemies tried to shoot him down with outdated antitank rockets. Fortunately for him, they missed (but not by far).
Two years ago, he was affected to the Interstellar Marines program due to his effectiveness in the assault team and his impressive constitution. After two successful missions, he joined the powered armour development project, and this is his first combat mission with such equipment. He was instructed to bring the powered armour back at any cost, but if the situation present itself, I doubt he would abandon the field for this reason.
Personality : Generally a nice person, he is the kind of guy you want to stop hostiles from passing a corridor. He is courageous and will hold the position until the situation is resolved. In fact, you may have to order him to retreat, it is not something he will naturally do, unless against overwhelming force. He tends to keep his head cold during battle, and while he may express some tension if the situation is really dire, I do not think he would snap without a truly soul-crushing experience. You should still try to avoid those, anyway.
In fact, I don't know if all this is because he is really courageous or because he is not that bright. Not to say he is stupid, but he has quite a lack of imagination. Most of his tactical sense consists in 'shoot the enemy and survive longer than him', so I suggest you to give him orders instead of letting him acting autonomously. That said, his survival capabilities in applying such tactic can be surprising.
His personal style as well as his equipment makes him unable to react fast against sudden threats on his back, and he will trust his squad-mates to cover him as much as you can trust him to cover them.
I recommend not ordering him to accomplish morally debatable acts, he is known to not take those very well. Similarly, try to not commit such acts in front of him.
Oh, and his humour is not that funny.
