"Since our last SITREP (two weeks ago) things have really started moving in a direction and at a pace that's seriously grinding away on the time remaining before we'll all be playing Deadlock against/with each other (soon)!

Just as exciting, I must admit, is the fact that our Swedish neighbors at Mojang have reached +4Mil "pre-orders" on Minecraft and in the same period of time (two weeks since our last SITREP) have sold +$2Mil worth of their remarkable indie game from a "small" website, true inspiration right there, Congrats!

I've finished Iteration 02 on the CR1 map and will start on iteration 03 next week and have already tweaked a lot based on all your great feedback, thanks! :) ".

"This week we finished and delivered our first successful sprint in a while. In case you don't know what a "sprint" is, it's a small period of time (usually 2-4 weeks) in which the team commits to delivering a bunch of tasks that, at the end of the sprint, has hopefully made the game better. It's a way for the team to gain momentum, awareness and track progress on what they're trying to create.

I've continued work on the networking of the marine and also been researching/testing hosting options for Deadlock, both of which went better than I'd hoped. "Playing" on a lossy dial-up connection and connected to a dedicated host at this point actually looks okay.

Overall it feels like we've got a lot more momentum than a couple of weeks back - here's to hoping it will continue like that! :)

"Very cool news from my part, i've now been a permanent resident at the offices of ZPS for the last 5 days and will be so for another 4 weeks :)

I'm almost done with all of our weapon class sheets (missing grenade launchers - not my favorite weapon type though :P), its been a ride getting these done - but soon we can finally look back and pick out specific parts or whole silhouettes…. To tell the truth, we've got enough weapons by now to fill 10 games.

We've been dabbling with an idea involving setting up fictional weapon developer companies so that we can tie in the fact that an SMG might look different than a sniping rifle. I've been throwing a couple of names at Kim, most are throwbacks to movies or books and authors that i'm familiar with - but everyone is more  than welcome to post ideas for names companies. Right now we're looking at splitting up the companies by continents, focusing on Europe/Russia, Asia and North America…this isn't set in stone at all, it's just the initial ideas.

Next up is doing more in-depth weapon designs (i've kinda started with 2nd iterations on the pistols) and i've promised Kim i would look into making a few concept passes on the Deadlock map….mighty excited! :D".

"Weeks have gone by, Finally things are aligning for full implementation, and not stacking up in Limbo. The Character now renders more correctly. I created a shader for the glass on the helmet, and I implemented a shit load of post effects on the character prototype. I also worked on the pipeline, so that we can add events to our animations. This led in to adding some of our character sounds and script on the character. Next week Heks and I will start moving all prototype code to the actual replicated pawn".

"The team is primarily focused on getting the netcode and the character controller up and running and making it all presentable on the map you saw the first iteration of already. As such there is not a lot of level design in the pipeline for now. I am awaiting the cool new modules to go from concept to actual models that I can use build awesome stuff, but untlll the character controller is done Anders will have his hands full making that. Being a bit impatient I have started to look into Maya myself to see if I can help out in creating the modules that I need. I have most experience using 3DS Max so the Maya interface is still pretty strange to me but slow progress is progress none the less.

Besides that I am sketching away on random ideas that I will try to implement once the modules are ready".

Actually i hadn't thought of that one GortosXtreme, though i think we should be vary of including names that hint at a style as well (it would be odd for me to see company named this, then i'd expect steyrs unique style).

I kind give you a couple of the EuroRussia names i've been kicking around.
Leonov Industries (hinting at the leonov spaceship from the 2010: the year we make contact).

Verhoeven (hinting at the infamous director of starship troopers and robocop, where IM draws some inspiration).

Atreidis, which hints both at the great faction from dune (one of my favorite books/movies of all time) and also hints at greek mythology (atreidis refers to one of the sons of Atreus...again hinting at warfare and world domination through arms basically).

Gal Koshkin (last names of two of the most famous weapon inventors, Uziel gal invented the Uzi).

Last but not least i thought up something like OrdenStaat (this refers back to the time of the prussian empire, and some templar reference - just for kicks).

Its just pure fun to think up stuff like this, i can't wait until we get to name weapons! I've reserved 'Cobra'....gotta love cheesy 80's movies right :D

Disclaimer: I'm a nitpicking bastard. Please, view this as some kind of Zero Punctuation reviews with me finding everything that strikes me as odd; please, don't take offence... The names are great!

I like the references a lot; especially the 2010 reference, it's too underrated just for not being 2001. Nitpick one: The Atreides are both sons of Atreus, Agamemmnon and Menelaos, just for future reference.
OrdenStaat is fine as well, good old Prussian military tradition. Nitpick two: Though, I think "Staat" sounds odd here. "OrderState". Maybe that's just my strange German sense of language there. How's "Ost-Orden"? That would be a clear reference to the Templars (fightin' around in the middle east) and Prussia (far east of the German Empire). Don't mind me, just trying to have something to brag about later, "you know what, guys? This comapany's name was totally my idea" :D

Let me see if I can think of some North America names for companies:

WeMaCom (Weapons Manufacturing Company)
SAMC (Small Arms Manufacturing Company)
AdWeM (Advanced Weapons Manufacturer)

Basically just coming up with a company name, then hacking off half the syllables and putting it together. Voila, a name worthy of a company in America! Sad, isn't it? Lol.

I was hoping for someone mentioning something like ThunderBall, not alone making an homage to a great james bond movie, but also bringing the 80's cheese company names in on the field....But good suggestions for sure (this might be worthy of a thread at some point, just too late for me to muscle up on that right now XD)

Okay, let's see what names I can come up with (especially making nerdy references, you know); btw Voyager, I've never seen a company named like that, only individual kinds of equipment...?

Barbarossa as an Italian company, maybe. Legendary Emperor plus it remains true to those Italian arms manufacturers with "B" (Benelli, Beretta).

Keller Small Arms Ltd.: Why, it's Logan Keller from Rainbow Six - Vegas!

Kampff Military International. Kampf is German for fight, plus, you know... Voight-Kampff-Test... You could of course just as well use Deckard Military International, or, for more obscure reference, Fancher MI.

Kamarov Personal Armory. You can reference other great FPSes as well, I think.

Nadosh Ltd. I'll let you figure that one yout yourself.

Fredersen AG. German again, reference to Fritz Lang's fantastic movie "Metropolis" from 1927, I'd call it the first real science fiction movie.

Prix Combat Equipment Inc., reference to Stanislav Lem's great books.

Cave Johnson, we're done here.

just my 5 cents of critiqueing the hell out ! :-)

The company names for weapon developers should IMHO not be obscure references to nerdy stuff. Instead it should be something that makes the game immersive, yet another point for people to identify with.
Weapon company names should be in english, chinese, indian/hindi, chinese, spanish, russian, french arabic, and just maybe one israeli/hebrew. OFC these companies being big multinationals have english cool sounding names, which yet portray they ancestry.

Makes me think of some other post, where it was suggested that you input your height and weight and the character was generated with these data, depending on nationality you might have slight "racial" bonus with one arms manufacturer.

Anyways just my 5 cents.

Well, we can have both - I have already made my nerdy references in German, English, Italian and Russian. Scribble's are in Russian, Nederlands, Greek, Hebrew and German. If they're nerdy references, those who got them will smirk (but not be thrown out of immersion, those names exist outside the movies as well) and those who didn't will think "Oh, it's a German manufacturer, nice" and play on.

As for the weapon / equipment manufacturer brands, I suggest Gruber, Yamashiro, Matsui co., Sylvain Industries.

There will be nine classes of weapons: Pistols, machine pistoles, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers and rocket launchers. Each class contains three different guns. I trust that the developers will include notable differences.

The shot of the screen looks great!
I hope for the chance to combine rifle sights (red dot or "eotech" with scope or scope with nightvision or red dot or "eotech" with mounted night vision sight behind it ... hm ... THAT would be nice)

Good names overall, will have a look with Kim on monday - it'll be sometime before we can make and decide on a final list.
The reason we're doing it this way is to tie in different styled weapons with their respective companies like i mentioned in the sit rep, so no two SMGS will look the same if they're from different companies.
ITO is planned to have their own style of weapons, not necessarily more powerful - but we're thinking of ways to make them stand out from the crowd weapons (for example an ITO shotgun could be less powerful than a stock company shotgun, but offer more variety in attachments and reload speed.)

They will be noticeably different, weapons from the same company will share the same traits, but that can be usage of materials, grip style or the shape of the overall weapon.

This is totally unverified, but imho night vision should be upgrades to the suit/helmet.

Hey Jesper since you're the concept artist, I might as well just ask you this question. Pertaining to the development on your "prototypic" weapons that you plan to move further with, will there be DIFFERENT TYPES of weapons or just the same weapons with different attachments, materials, grip style, etc. I know you already answered this question but just wanted some direct clarification. Because in my opinion, if you guys just create the same weapons with different attachments only, i don't think there will be..umm..enough diversity, so to speak, with this. I personally would perfer creating DIFFERENT TYPES of weapons instead of just having 5 of the same weapons and adding different types of attachments and calling it a DIFFERENT TYPE of weapon. So that's just my predilection and absolutly not an insult. HAhehhhe...Oh and one other thing will there be night vision to the helmets or anything like that?

Yes well i'll try and answer as concise as i can, it's still not my decision to make but i've talked to the team about different options on how to differentiate weapons, so not all SMG's for example look alike. Kim is quite keen on the concept of establishing a 'super-car' like system, where the styles of the weapons are all different, and on equal terms although their stats will be in a rock-paper-scissors sort of system. Super-car A beats car B, but C beats A.
All i can say though right now is if you've got an SMG from company A, something like the reload system could be radically different on an SMG from company B etc.
Its a bit too early to say anything more precise, but i hope it answers some of your questions. Trust me though, we'll do all that we can to have them both feel, act and look different :).

well you guys i have a huge suggesstion that is upgrade the website after deadlock its completly a smart idea! make an online community of clans and what not expand people!
could we also possibly see classes in deadlock like medic assult infiltrartor and engineer
. make some cool skins and what not..... HEY finaly if you can make a ballpark guesse on when
IM first contact might come out?

Bonjour, bien qu'il soit difficile de dire quand le jeu sortira, une partie multijoueur appelée 'Deadlock' sortira très bientôt (accessible à ceux qui ont précommandé le jeu sans doute), je dirais avant la fin de l'année.
Il s'agit de la troisième partie après Bullseye et Running Man, qui correspondent aux phases d'entrainement et de sélection des marines dans l'histoire. Nous aurons donc un FPS multijoueur à peu près complet, dans des environnement d'entraînement (un sitrep précédent montre l'une des cartes en démo, reproduisant un extérieur dans une immense cave) et sans doute avec des armes visiblement d'entrainement.

Sinon, je te suggèrerais d'utiliser un logiciel de traduction automatique, ils permettent de comprendre assez bien les textes en anglais.
Le mieux reste quand-même d'apprendre l'anglais. D'expérience, une fois que tu as appris comment fonctionne la langue elle-même (les temps, les constructions de phrases...), tu peux apprendre naturellement en allant sur des sites qui t'intéressent avec wordreference.com ouvert dans un autre onglet pour le vocabulaire. D'expérience, ca marche très bien. (J'ai appris l'anglais comme ça en quelques mois en lisant des mangas en ligne^^)


For a French or Belgian name, I would suggest Ardan Manufacture d'Armes ou Ardan Fabrique d'Armes.
'Ardan' is the name of one of the heroes in From the Earth to the Moon, one of the first SF novels dealing with space travel. And it mostly involves arms builders. (You can change the name as you want, through).

@ marine565: Afaik there will be no classes, you will be able to build your own class by acquiring different abilities - you'll be able to be a sniper medic, a rocket launcher wielding stealth based soldier or a sniping specialist with a shotgun and lts of grenades, if you wish. Player freedom.

@ Bozo, I like Ardan. The should have the best armour piercing stat, to remain true to the reference.

I would avoid referencing too recent things, as you will always find people who didn't like them, catch the reference and don't like it. And some may also call them cheap. For more 'classical' works, there is far less risk, as people who didn't like them either still recognise them as classics or won't catch them.
Just nitpicking...

If you ever make flamethrowers or equivalents, or even fire extinguishers, make them from Montag Industries.
In Farenheit 451, the hero is called Guy Montag, fireman. But more literally.

But at first glance I didn't find one of the more obvious names tho:

Asimov Inc.
or even - Asimov Armament Corp.

In tribute to Isaac Asimov the American author and professor of biochemistry.
