SITREP - Week 001

published Friday, 15 April 2011, 11:00 by Reese

Greetings Marines and welcome to our first installment to our new weekly SITREP initiative which we will blog of every Friday.

SITREP is basically an ongoing progress report where we publicly display our current tasks, progress and focus areas. Primarily targeted at those of you who find game development and our Open Door Development methodology intriguing. At the same time (due to time issues) we are discontinuing our current Question Of The Week.

Team debriefing

Kim (ZPSHicks): "This week have been spent living and breathing the Operations map for Deadlock, trying to rework the modules and prepping a bit of multiplayer potential in the level design, while continuously designing and implementing our ambitious light-pipeline for IM. I must confess that I've also spent a bit of time polishing various assets and effects because I actually work faster in the long run if I give myself room to try out ideas to boost creativity along the way, which actually also provide me with a good sense of peace of mind that this can and will work".

Kenneth: "This week I've started the Avatar Competition in collaboration with Aevaris, worked on and blogged about my CubeSounds prototype, iterated on our PR strategy, and lastly I've written and prepared Log Entry 019."

Mikael (heks): "Okay, so this week I supported Kim's map iteration with some helper tools, got our main server unlisted on various blacklists (…don't ask), and worked on a networking prototype for internal testing of game-/level-design. I enjoyed the last one the most".

Nicolai (Reese): "I have started to prep’ for the upcoming music scoring of our multiplayer Deadlock... ah i can already smell the sweet feeling of creativity. For me, this will be a superb boost and a much needed change in the somewhat daunting daily business administration and fund raising tasks. I’ve been installing and spend some time to setup up a rented DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) system to compose while being at the office. For those of you interested in music and/or the process I’ll shortly start an ongoing music composing blog which will give you an opportunity to follow me on this new soundtrack journey. As a sidenote im looking at options for an improved payment system in addition to our current paypal only shop. I'll get back on that later".

wow another interesting thing i will wait for every week.

It is not to bad that the QOTW won't exist any more. I statet to get more unrelatet to the game. You know what you want to do and if we have some ideas we think you should listen to we will just post it in the Forum.

Great to hear for you indept! Though I miss you just picking up a simple video camera and filming some of your progress (doesn't have to be as time consuming as it sounds!)

Though I love the little unity previews you've been cooking up for us!

Keep it going:D

I do find this as exciting as you do. It kind of pushes open door developement to the next level. I can even imagine posting reports each week would result in a higher motivation of the team in a way that they want to have something to write about. At least I think this would help me with my daily tasks^^

Maybe you could add a 'What's next?'-section for the next SITREP. Which could basically be a summary of what you are going to release next week. Kenneth said something about Log 19, which I'm already eager for. Working on my diploma I've learned that when presenting your work it is not only important to show what you have done in the past, but also what your next steps will look like. Even if you will not completely do everything you wanted in the end. The audience (university personnel in my case, this community in your case) will appreciate it and see that you have a rough plan in mind.
Thank you for posting this nice piece of summary. Also, it was interesting to see what others think about IM.

My regards, Kendzi

This is great.

A weekly update about what everyone has been doing is far more interesting then the QOTW!

These things are what makes the whole project so unique in the world.

I agree with Kendzi and Nocheiner. QOTW was a fun thing but still unrelated. I am most eager to find out how you are coming along with this project and what your future plans might be. That would definatly keep my interesst in the game so thanks for the SITREP.

This is why ZP is amazing. They see a good suggestion from the community and implement it. This is an amazing step forward in open door development. This also gives the marines enlisted who are very busy a more condensed and scheduled morsel.

Altogether lovely work.

FtLotG and all that.
