Picture of the Week 0031
published Monday, 16 May 2011, 12:00 by ZPSHicks
We've shown a bit of unpolished work-in-progress from Deadlock recently .. so this week we've decided to post an old screenshot from onboard ITO's orbital research station Xeno-13, because we feel it provides a decent representation of the kind of polish we're going for in both Deadlock and IM in general. (The screenshot is from our old engine but could might as well have been from Unity and also reveals one of our old badly designed shark creature iterations)

I don't want to be skeptical, but somehow I doubt you'll be able to create this sort of visual quality on current engine, and keep it on playable framerate. At least nothing I've ever seen in Unity convinced me it has similar visual/performance ratio as 5 years old UE3.:(
I hope I'm wrong though.

actually i agree with user47 all footage we have seen from the old engine looks amazing
but the demos in unity dosent look that convincing(amazingly bad spelling!)
i hope you will be able to make it remind a bit more of this in future

It's actually really nice looking world. And i mean not only "world" ;)
I think it would bee truly wonderful if you guy (Zero Point) got help from other developer or just programmers like yourselves who could help you out in making these games. Maybe 40 more? :) As well as a stable finance situation. That would make it possible to much more details in the game, and the game would be finished faster ;)
Although the spirit in the team may change, which is not such a good thing. So I guess I need to help you with the money as a sign of support for you hard work.
*went and bought 4 support medals :))
For the love of the game!!!

I believe it's possible with Unity, from what I've seen so far.

So... This is what Deadlock will look like? If so, I want to express my eternal love.

@ user47: It's not about the engine, it's about what you put into that engine, and how you code it to look via shaders etcetera.
Just look at Call of Duty: MW2. Without all their custom shaders and lighting, it would look like a game from the 2000 era, but because of all their shaders and cool lighting techniques, it looks pretty damn good, although it should technically look like crap! (Which it actually does beneath the surface.)
Just my two cents. :)

@User47: I'm a Unity user and i can say for sure that what you see in that pic is perfectly achievable on Unity 3+ and even surpass it. Just so you know the Deadlock previews that we have now, run a bit slow because they aren't optimized, they are just experimenting with settings, lights and geometry till they find what works, when that is set, them they will start the optimization cycle, the final iteration i bet will look good and play well, of course on a decent PC, do not try to play this game on a bad laptop/desktop and expect good frames per second.
Also what Unity can achieve with the web player is not compared to what you can achieve using the normal "install game to play" system but is very close.
Kosai106 forgot to say that the MW2 engine is the idtech3 (Quake 3) engine with a modern render system, so as Kosai106 said "It's not about the engine, it's about what you put into that engine".
And for a even more Impressive display of engine transformation just look for a indie game in the making called OverDose, is a game being made on a updated idtech 2 engine (Quake 2).

I just realised how scary it would be to walk down the hall, and all of the sudden a dangerous shark walks around the corner. Like, wow! (:

Xeno-13. Another reference/nod to the ALIENS movies?
ZPSHicks:

@user47: We do not have any doubts that we'll make Interstellar Marines in Unity look just as good as any other game-engine on the marked. Love and creativity ftw!
@Vytautas_goodNO: Thanks for the support, its always warms our hearts when we see pimped marine badges! :)
@Chris: There is a lot of tribute to the greatest movie ever created and additionally if you look "Xeno" up on Wikipedia it'll gives you a good idea about what ITO is working on onboard the military research station.

@ZPSHicks: "Xeno- is a prefix based on the Greek word "Xenos", meaning stranger. In biology, it is often used to designate species-difference, such as xenotransplantation (transplantation between organisms of different species) or *xenopregnancy*. In science fiction it has been used to refer to extraterrestrial life."
What ! aliens are taking our womans?
