Zero Point Energy (ZPE)

The discovery of this virtually unlimited ressource was the beginning of a new era, and the union of human kind. Learn more about the first experiments that formed the foundation for interstellar travel.

Zero Point Energy reaction

Few believed that the exponential technological evolution of the 20th century would ever be paralleled. The 21st century not only paralleled it – it went beyond it. The single-most important reason for this was the discovery of Zero Point Energy.

Originally proposed by Albert Einstein and Otto Stern the concept of Zero Point Energy started as a purely theoretical quirk to explain a residual term needed to solve the equations of quantum mechanics. One April morning in 2100 aboard the International Space Station, a team of top scientists from all around the world managed to produce a quantum of energy from the vacuum of space surrounding them. Showing the possibility to generate pure energy exploiting the fabric of space-time itself, the experiment showed promise to solve the depletion of Earth’s energy sources. It was the end of a dark age of apocalyptic prophecies, and the beginning of a brighter and better future.

Experiment

It was suggested to diverge the power obtained in the experiment to the propulsion system of the space-station holding it in orbit. Rather than maintaining stationary distance to Earth as predicted, the experiment sent the 2 million ton space station hurling rapidly away from Earth threatening the lives of those aboard. An emergency rescue mission led by the ITO special forces managed to retrieve the ISS-scientists and most staff after almost 10 months of chasing the uncontrollable facility.

Subsequent evaluation of the experiment revealed it to have generated energy equivalent to roughly 86% of that produced by powerplants in the entirety of human history.

Oh there we go, now we're getting somewhere. The plot following the I-Marines just bit me on the nose, now I have something to gather up on.

It's a good leading, I do enjoy it so far... the tension is killing me though, I can't wait to see some real gameplay with someone actually playing the game, or at least the demo.

Zero Point Energy = the Power of the Void.

"For when He saw the last photon decay, He took the infinite emptiness and through sacrifice created every information from nothing."

Or so they say.

Briliant conceptual Idea! Keep going...

Just wanted to share...

• "In simplistic terms it has been said that there is enough energy in the volume the size of a coffee cup to boil away Earth’s oceans. - that’s one strong cup of coffee!"

• "The Zero Point Field is an energyfield in whicht all comes together. Some call it god, some call it maya some call it an enormous energy field from which maybe mankind can learn a great deal about live."

Zero Point Energy... is this why this game corp is called Zero Point? (ooo! bustat!)

Yeah, I remember reading the company name had a connection to the game universe, but I still wonder why they renamed the company Glitch before the financial crisis.

Also, I'm kinda emberassed that I haven't read this stuff before now. The backstory that is.

Meh...no too thrileld about this idea. I don't belive in free, limitless energy. There's a catch. There's always a catch.

And I wonder - how the hell did the ISS (the station itself and all of it's equipment) survive that MASSIVE energy sure. No system on earth is designed for an energy output of billions and billionsof TW. It would melt any cable, any reactor - heck, the whole station.

I realise the game needs a powerfull energy source for it to work, but IMHO, it should be kept on more sane levels....

Well I see ZPE as a very controllable source, not a massive source from which you cut a slice. They'll probably explain how it works.

I highly doubt that this is possible in the next hundred years. C'mon. Finally give us fusion instead!

HAH they spelled resource in the first line wrong. XD

yes star gate did have something similar the ZPM. still ZPE is a cool idea

I guess you never have to much energies. As long as I can shoot the all those crazy scientists that will use it in an experiment that will threaten humanity, I am happy about it.

This is actual science too. We may be using ZPE as a power source sometime in the future!

i really hate to be a buzz kill but there seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of zero point energy, people tend to see energy, and forget about the zero point prefix. zero point energy is a theoretical limit, specifically the lowest amount of energy possible. think of Absolute Zero, its the lowest theoretical temperature (-273 K i think?) it's not however possible to attain this temperature, as this would violate the laws of thermodynamics. Zero point energy is like Absolute zero, even if you could attain energy from something near this point, you wouldn't be able to power a small LED light for a millisecond, and you would probably have to expend a massive amount of energy to get it.

my solution? simple, nuclear fusion, its already almost possible (in like a decade ITER will be up) and they will probably be able to get it down to a rather small size to include on ships and such, its a better alternative to ZPE at least
