Interplanetary Treaty Organisation (ITO)

published Thursday, 14 May 2009, 20:00 by ZPSHicks

The Interstellar Treaty Organisation, ITO, is an alliance of countries that wishes to further the exploration of space. To do so it provides a stable social and economical platform on Earth in order to nuture the commercial space sector. During its century long existence it has focused on expansion through the spreading of cultural and economic goods, specifically staying away from using its armed forces in anything but defense. Although diplomacy is its primary vector it maintains control over a formiddable force of hardware and personnel.

European free market growth 2074-2084As the 21st century drew to an end, Europe was experiencing an economic boom. Its population ached for access to space, there was mounting pressure for faster, better, cheaper ways to get to orbit and the moon. The commercial aerospace industry had seen a huge increase in demand for materials brought to and from space, more and more satellites and hightech manufacturing facilities were put up.

There was a small but growing space tourism industry coming to life, with a space station already in orbit catering to a rich clientele and a similar habitat under construction on the moon.

But a sense of worry was growing, that the economic boom would not last or that human stupidity would force us to abandon all space efforts again. Something needed to be done to ensure a stable base from which the expansion into space could continue. That materialized in 2096, when a proposed alliance was ratified by western European countries and the Interplanetary Treaty Organization was created. It's goal would be the pursuit of peaceful expansion, leveraging the combined economic resources and military might of its member countries.

To keep the territories stable ITO has been hard at work knitting together the populations of all these incredibly diverse cultures. While each nation retains their sovereignty, ITO has implemented a series of standards designed to allow the freedom of movement of people, goods and services across its nations. The same basic infrastructure and education is in place across all countries, creating a common foundation between the people. ITO also provides financial aid to countries to boost their standards of living and industrialization.

They've pushed especially hard on education, with ITO-run schools and universities being particularly prevalent in South America and the Middle East. In little over a century ITO has successfully eased much of the tension in what used to be the hotspots of the world. Its number of nations grew quickly: In a series of expansions taking place over sixty years, ITO spread from its original founding countries to the current list of over eighty countries. Amongst its members are almost all European and Middle Eastern countries, large parts of Asia, Russia, the United States of America, and most countries in Africa and South America.

ITO member nations

Especially noteworthy was the 3rd Expansion in 2121, where ITO dedicated their resources to financing the construction of Zero Point Energy reactors to all its member nations. The gift of limitless energy won many countries over that were previously thought impossible to persuade peacefully.

ITO multi-purpose vehicle on approach to a privately run spacestation

To this day ITO maintains direct control over all orbital traffic within its territory; no individual nations are allowed to operate aerospace vehicles without the use of ITO-trained pilots. Concern has been raised over this level of control and potential for abuse, but ITO maintains that a unified command and control structure is required to safely operate in space and ensure constant growth in the space industry. The ITO countries are responsible for almost 70% of all space-faring traffic (the remaining traffic is generated from the CoSEA territories)

ITO Organization

ITO is organized into the following political offices, scientific endeavours, civilian programs and military structures:

Its just beautiful to see what ocean's growth has caused in the 22 century, no more Japan (except apparently Mount Fuji), Korea, almost no England, a big Panama channel, even the Baja California (damn it was a nice place...). I don't see the Netherlands or Belgium, which means that they've probably been incorporated to Germany and France respectively.
I'm hoping we'll have a lot more information available in the future.
Great work, guys and girls.

...Alaska is apart of the United States of America... 49th state..

Comon Zero Point.. Biggest state in the United States..

Eh, well nobody seems to be complaining that Canada was split in half there, so I'm not so worried about Alaska.

As for that gray spot in southern Africa I suspect we're looking at one huge crater and about 3 smaller ones left over from WMDs (ICBMs maybe?). What I'm wondering about is the political situation that could have caused that, especially considering South Africa's border has swallowed Botswana (maybe the other way around?) and Zimbabwe is... well it looks like half of it got wiped off the map.

Nahh... if u compare all grey spots on the whole map ... u learn 2 things ...

1) They don´t have typical crater shapes or other typical crater characteristics!
2) They have the same "grey" as the oceans!

THERFORE > They are lakes and landbased watersources and NOTHING ELESE!

I realy like the whole ITO concept =)

Good story and still some potential for conflict in the human society. Luckily it is not too utopic. Keep up the good work ZPS!

I suspect the departure of the UK from that map is to do with the polar ice caps; a shortfall some have predicted will happen if we don't cease our global dependency on fossil fuels.

Personally I like the concept of trying to aid other countries into improving infrastructure and space travel, as well as the sponsored-education program. In a related thing I've been pusuing a design for a new form of renewable solar power, and one of the future projects sustained by that lays out a very similar plan of action for developing countries.

The storyline is not realistic at all, what makes you think "western European countries" are still in the center stage of attention after year 2050?!??!?! this is the typical western centric viewpoint again....

I am very happy the mainland of Greece is still there. Just because its where civilization started doesn't mean its where it will fall. I started laughing when I saw that so many countries had disappeared. Its not all that believable I have to say. By the year 2121 if space is open to the public is possible and efficient enough with technology I am sure we will have the technology to save countries from being flooded. Very disappointed to see Japan go under same with the UK. I am bettering the reason Russia is still so large compared to the other countries it because the glaciers in Russia just melted onto every other country. xD

China and India, the two countries with the largest population in the world is not in ITO? Hard to believe

Badge

Nice map. Too bad it isn't all that accurate :P

While Britain and Florida are underwater (as they should be), Russia, South America, and Australia are still mostly unchanged, while large portions *should* be underwater. Japan and Baja California on the other hand should remain above sea level though...

However, the backstory is good, and it's interesting that the map factored in Climate Change in the first place.

Can't help but notice that Israel and the palestinian territories are missing - apparently they went back to the state of transjordan...

I really don't see why you find it unrealistic, obviously China and India has gone for some other sollution when it comes to space travel, that does seem probable given the current economic trends and I do notice that the ITO only controls 70 % of all space travel - that leaves 30 % for those two countries.

Since everyone likes commenting on the map, I see that North and South America are no longer connected. Is this due to flooding of the countries between them, or continental drift?

Hey, if you guys want a better map, I know of an artist that does some pretty good alternate history/science fiction cartography. I'm sure he'd be happy to accept a commission from a company like ZPS. Let me know if you want the link to his page.
