The Gameplay of IM

published Wednesday, 13 May 2009, 16:00 by Jr

Ok, so let's have a look at the game play of Interstellar Marines, what sets this game apart from all the other great games out there?

A dark place where the unexpected might happen.

Well, Interstellar Marines is at the core a Sci-fi First Person Shooter (FPS).

Now that's not really anything special to say the least, however there is a bit more to it than that. When we as developers (and not to forget gamers) began to create a new FPS game, a main motivation was that even though lots of great games came out, we always seemed to miss something.

One game would have a great open ended world while another featured a cool skill system, one game offered intense combat while in yet another you got the chance to play cooperatively. However we wanted to bring all the features we as gamers enjoyed the most together in one great FPS game.

Ambitious? - hell yeah, but on the other hand you could also just look at it as evolution of the genre. Not really any point in (re-) creating what has already been successfully made by others, and as mentioned, we saw an empty space in the selection of available games still waiting to be filled.

So off we went starting filling that gap with what will eventually become Interstellar Marines, and here are some of the key features we have focused on:

RPG

Playing a pre-made character in a game can be great fun, but when designing Interstellar Marines it was pretty clear that we wanted more than that, we wanted to give players the freedom to shape and mold their character themselves.

In the game the characters will enter the solar system as rookies, but during the progression of the game all gradually become more and more experienced as the story unfolds. With experience comes new skills and abilities as well as access to new and better weaponry, and it is now all up to each player how they want to build and equip their Marine.

Create a stealthy medic with hacking skills, a heavy armored sniper with explosives or maybe an officer with excellent strategic abilities and a minigun?

It is all up to the player to decide.

When the hunter becomes the hunted ...

Just like the character is growing and taking shape by gaining skills during the course of the game, so are the weapons of the marine. In a somewhat similar way to traditional RPG character progression we also wanted the players to be able to "personalize" their weaponry and equipment.

As an Interstellar Marine moves up in rank, he gets to choose more and more weapons and weapon utilities from the vast armory of the IM corps and is now able to freely customize his guns and items. If you pick an assault rifle you could choose to improve it with the shotgun extension and hollow point bullets or perhaps a silencer, piercing rounds and a scope?

The options are plentiful and it is all up to each player to freely make the decisions that suit his or hers preferred play style.

Co-op

What is more fun than playing through a stunning adrenaline-filled game that completely blows you away? Doing so with your friends!

In Interstellar Marines you will have the option of teaming up with up to three of your friends and play through the game in co-operative mode (co-op). From the very beginning of designing this game, we knew we wanted co-op to be a core element and because of that we have shaped all of the other features to enhance the co-operative game play.

To the machine thingy!!!!111

The skill system will give players a vast number of options for all kinds of team play and all of the levels of IM has been designed with the clear focus of supporting co-op game play. Even the story line is written with multiple protagonists in focus so that all players in a group will have their unique place and doing in the upcoming epic saga.

Of course there is always the option of playing on your own, but should you choose to invite some friends to a game (or find some new ones on-line) a whole new challenge awaits you and your band of elite soldiers

Open Ended Level Design

When we were to create the world of the Interstellar Marines, plenty of ideas came up for great locations and places for the players to explore. However no matter where the story would take the marines, we were pretty sure about one thing; the places should all be open ended and not in any way force the players to just take a pre-chosen path through.

So we constructed the game in such a way that there are always several ways to achieve the main objectives/complete the levels and players will have the option of using brute force, stealth tactics and/or make use of the various skills as a mean to successfully clear a mission.

However not only should players be able to explore the areas of the game freely, we also wished for the levels to be as dynamic as possible, so that the game would stay fresh and exciting even when you came back for the fifth or sixth time. The cool thing about a dynamic environment is that it allows for tactical choices, and the player should consider the effects of shutting down the lights, turning on the sprinklers and how the enemy AI will react to such changes in the environment.

To add to the re-playability all levels are non-scripted and the various “inhabitants” of a location will have a life of their own (guards patrolling, scientists working, crew personnel cleaning, etc) until the players intervene one way or the other, so there are no monsters jumping out of the closet when players step on that exact trigger on the floor.

Looks very good good, but i have one single question will this game have competetive multiplayer? And if so will it launch with it or will it be something that will come out in an expansion?

I like where this is going but I'd really like to know what type of RPG this game will turn out to be. For instance would the gameplay world play Like FarCry 2(TM) or is it more like gameplay resembeling a game developed by Bioware(TM) (Games with large beautiful scenery but cheesey 'character movement animations'). And is it more focused on Singleplayer/Multiplayer/or is it a Massive Open World Role Playing Game like a 'Bethesda(TM)' game but in space... sorry if it seems inapropriate to compare this game to other games with having all the details, but I'm eager to find out more because I have many question that I would love to have answered.

One more thing... what kind of enemies would the gamers be fighting, are they only "legged sharks," or is there a lot more to this game than mutants/aleins. Last question, what is the plot?

@Loratio24:
As much as I've seen, it looks like some regular space marines got a mission, someone tried to saboutage it, the regular marines handled the situration with top notch skill, the regular marines got promoted to Interstellar Marines.
The Interstellar Marines get more complex missions, hence the sharks. Thats what I now :D

Wow, I just heard of this game from the vi-doc posted on gametrailers. What you guys are doing is completely amazing so far and combining the best elements of seperate games is great. Regarding the customization, are you guys by any chance thinking of letting the player customize and upgrade their squad robot? It'll be awesome joining other people's game and seeing a personalized robot with different setups and custom decals. Maybe find parts throughout the game or recieved as prices as part of an in-game achievement system similar to that of LIVE and PSONLINE games?

Keep up the awesome work guys!

So just to make sure I understand, the game isn't open world but features big levels that you can explore right? Are we talking a more traditional Halo-style level or is it something a bit more RPG like where we choose from a few missions on each level/environment similar to something like a Mass Effect?

Badge

@ Anthony_Galindo

If you have played System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Stalker or RS3 - Raven shield then you will have a hint about how the levels in IM will be structured.

We want to give the players in IM the freedom to have very cool story objectives and then have it be absolutely up to the players how to approach the situation. So it's kind of the realism in the level design from Raven Shield with the freedom of choice from Deus Ex geared by the focus on story from System Shock 2.

More on this as we go into much more detail, when opening up for more depth in the "The Game" section! :)

For the love of the game,
ZPSHicks

If you're comparing game play to the likes of Stalker, RS3, and Deus Ex then I'm extremely interested in seeing some of that game play... for that matter, so are many of my friends who are a bit skeptical of the whole 'shark' thing but otherwise wanting to know more.

Will zero g be addressed (it rarely is)? And if so, wouldn't laser weapons be a good idea? Can we pilot vehicles? And if so, will zero g be addressed?

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

There is a reason why they have an avatar saying "No more laser weapons." I assume that the hardware must be enormously huge, so therefore no laser weapons as it may not be compact, yet!

And why laser weapons? It doesn't have the "feel" compared to projectile weapons. I love the reloading sequences - it has a coolness to it. Laser weapons just get overheated.

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

Or run out of batteries or something... it's not nearly as exciting when the first thing to come to mind when you can't fire anymore is the energizer bunny... actually...

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

Yeah batteries... when they have zero point energy, good point... not.

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

Would you walk around carrying a weapon that has more power then all of the combined output of today's power plants? Forget if it was even feasible, I would not want something like that in one set of hands.

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

What I'm really saying is that the equipment to make zero point energy must be huge (hence the concept picture) so therefore we cannot use it. Also batteries might be ineffective since the energy consumption to make lasers deadly must be huge. And I doubt without zero point energy you can have a long lasting battery.

Anyway, we may all be wrong, but one thing for sure is that the developers won't put laser weapons in( look at the avatar), thank god.

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

Like I said, a recoil-less weapon would make sense in zero g. In a space ship or station a weapon that could be calibrated for penetration, heat or spread would also be useful. Lasers have no recoil. There are other energy weapons that have been invented that do not rely on explosive energy to deliver a projectile. My concern is that of realism: unloading a SMG into some shark thing in zero g would toss your ass against a bulkhead so hard that it would knock the wind out of you. Another thing to consider in zero g is how smoke, steam and fire behave (which is very different compared to how they behave at sea level on Earth). Large, massive things like ships and other vehicles would also behave differently, which is why I asked. It's fine if they don't address zero g, it rarely is and yet good space games are still made. "No more laser weapons." Fine. Recoil-less gunpowder fueled projectile weapons? I seriously doubt it.

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

well to be fair we dont know any of the locations of the game... so we dont know if there will be zero g or not.
We also dont know if zero point energi could be used on a local scale, such as to create gravity on a space station/ship

As for realisme and sci fi... thats a bad mix imo, the best sci fi stories dont really care about realismen... really as long as the gameplay is fun its all good, and in my personal opinion a projectile based weapon is often more fun then lasers

Badge
Avatar

4 years, 10 months ago

Realism might not be the best word, for I think everyone refers to a *believable* universe (as ZPS explicitly calls it, by the way). I'm of those who care about that, I'm sort of tired of all the ideas that come out of nowhere in a hell load of sci-fi universes. Some may be very interesting, but they'll stay in the "What the..?" part. IMHO, It's important to be given believable explanations for pretty everything in order for the universe to be truly immersive. That would be the "oh, right, cool" part that makes everything less random, more polished. If it's really well done, we could talk about pseudo-realism, visionary stuff. Who didn't feel stupid thinking exactly that playing Deus Ex, right?

Everyone also loves mysteries though, and I think detailing the little things all around them (the sort of the no-laser thing for example) helps believing there *is* a hidden explanation; rather than thinking "okay, that's weird, but whatever.."

Now, of course, it has to be fun, but I don't think that ZPS is engaged to give us a game that is *only* fun. Quake-likes are there for that, and I enjoy them very much, but they're different.

Um.. I don't mean to give pressure though, I could do with fun only =).

very good points thib :)

The post i made before about realisme (/a beliveable unverise) was simply to point out that going over the top with explaning everything often drains the whole idea of doing a sci fi game/story - if we wanted explanations for everything it would be more interresting to have the setting in the modern day where we can explain whats going on..

When writing my last post i was thinking of authors like philip k. dick and brian aldiss - these 2 rarely explains *how* things are done, simply tell a great story instead. Of cause books and games cant always be compared this easily but i for instance cant really see the need to explain zero g or similar "problems", that could just disctract from an otherwise great story :)

I very much agree with your point about the mysteries, making the world seem belivable without explaning everything is the way to go.

Btw who is the writer for the game? Is there even a dedicated writer onboard yet? To be honest i find the quality of the background posted here on the site so far to be very random...some good bits and some bad bits.

Questions about game:

1) Will there be vehicles that we can drive or pilot?
2) Will the PS3 version have Six-axis motion control (with fully adjustable sensitivity) for vehicles?
3) Will the PS3 version have the option to use a USB keyboard & mouse? (Please note that the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 has this option)
4) Spectator mode - will this game have this?
5) Will we be able to take screenshots & video of in-game action & share it with our friends?
(Note: The PS3 version of Battlefield Bad Company allows you to capture screenshots and
Halo 3 allows you to capture video).
6) Will the PS3 version get its own dedicated space in Playstation Home?

Awesome Game Guy!!! Would Love to See, in this Game, Mostly Focused on the Multiplayer Aspect than the Campaign... Yeas, the Campaigns are nice, but they are Usually played Once of Twice, and thats it... If a Game is to be Truly a Hit, it Must have the Most Multiplater Maps, Weapon, Perks, Achievements, and Especially Focus on Weapon Upgrades to Every Single Gun! The Main, Probably the #1 thing a Successful Shooter Must Have is Less Capture the Flag/Plant a Bomb/Defend.... It Must have more Straight Up Deathmatches!!! I would like to see Huge Deathmatches, all the Way up from (1 vs. 1) to (24 vs. 24)!!! The More Guys Playing, the More to Kill... Wars never had 4 vs. 4! Now, I am not saying you should Go Overboard, but I think at least 1 Game out there Needs a 24 vs. 24 or even 12 vs. 12 Deathmatches... Not, Flag, Defend, Bomb, BUT Deathmatches!!! I can Definitely see Where this is going and I think it Will be a Hit! I Really Do, and Cannot Wait till the Finished Game Comes to the 360, and Later DLC's, for more Weapons and Maps!!! A First Person Shooter, should Not be a Game, but a Shooter! The Point of shooters is to Kill the Enemies, Not Capture a Flag.... Now this is My Opinion, and you can say what you want, but Modern Warfare 2 Did it right, and Focused More, and is Played More, with Their Deathmatches...... This is the Last bit, and Really is not Seen Much in Any game, and that is, GORE! Now, When you Shoot Someone in the Head, or Arm, or Leg even, you Should really Show More Detail!!! It just makes for a Realistic Game, Like what Gears of war did, or Fallout 3... If you Kill an Opponent, and is dead on the Ground, Blast the corps Into Pieces!!! I know, that the Less Gore the More Sales will be sold, because of Kids... I think that Even if it is Gorey, Parents are still going to buy the Game! Anyways, I know I added A Lot Here for you Guys, but (Again) - More Focus on Multiplayer, and you will Hit the Jackpot!!! Peace!

Just wondering for a cool game mode if their is any online game play at all other then co op.
Both teams 6v6 or 9v9 battle it out in two identical levels side by side so one team is in one and one team is in another you will never meat till the end. and the idea is you work together with you team to get the most points and to beat the other team till the end just like a race but you have to shoot targets to open doors or kill monsters to survive or what ever you guys are putting in the game. and at the end it shows the score but both teams are at the end stage so you can just kill each other for the last 5 seconds till the next game begins.

just an idea plenty more if you guys wont some :)

Just some personal experiences with games. Look at WOW over 11million players why because of customisation on characters. I tell you now if you think you have enough customization then your wrong trust me look at the COD's good game play but let down by the customisations. GO mad on let the player customise his boots and visor colour and most in importantly DO INTERNAL GUN UPGRADES NOT JUST EXTERNAL what you cannot see is more powerful then what you can see.

Hope this helps and just say Graphics are amazing just remember to make this game run on all systems of PC + XB,PS3 and even Wii

@BeersYourFriend about you Gory idea is good but they can just add a option which could be PW protected so kids cannot change it but saying that with killer sharks WALKING! about it might put kids of any way. But More Gore the better i say but not over the top.

i think that they should make it like gears of war [TM] were you can change gore affects so gore lovers can have there gore, and kids play to. another idea is that the can make the game 3rd person because i know a lot of people of that dislike 1st person shooters but when i first told them about interstellar marines they thought it was cool except that it was a 1st person shooter, but i like first person shooters :]

Just saying, Global Agenda has open zones, an RPG leveling system with abilities to acquire (And yet a skilled level one play can beat an unskilled level 50 player), intense scenario and instance-based PvP, instance based PvE, and some great hack and slash/shooting gameplay as well as jetpacks to round off one awesome shooter. I do hope that the co-op doesn't mean compromising the single-player experience. Also, how about the ability to command your AI partners? (I expect that will be included with Rainbow Six being one of the primary sources of inspiration.)

Shark monsters, a chance to confront my mortal fears of them! Beyond that, do whatever it takes to keep those greedy Corporate thugs like EA off of you! Some companies under them are fighting well to keep their heads above water but in time EA will squeeze the life out of them like they have done all companies. Open-world+FPS+RPG+Multiplayer modes = win ultimately. God bless you guys and rock this industry!
