ITO Training Grounds (Art Direction)

We're finally ready to present you with a taste of our Art Direction on ITO Training Grounds (your home away from home during Project IM), which this time around is getting a lot more love to meet our ambitious vision for Deadlock.

Introduction

The construction of, what at the time was called NATO Training Grounds, began just a few years into the second Space Age, during an ambitious re-construction of Dreamland, which was all part of U.S.A.'s commitment to secure better support when developing and testing new military space technologies commissioned by NATO.

 

Mood Board: Location Landscape

ITO Training Grounds is placed inside a restricted airspace over the the barren landscapes and mountains of South Nevada USA, referred to by professionals as The Container. The Training Facilities have proven it's worth over the decades when testing various experimental weapons system and other black military development programs.

Mood Board: Artificial Caves

Besides various political reasons, there is one overarching reason why Gloom Lake was selected as site; The deep solid rock underground near the north-west corner of the old dried-out lake, which was the perfect foundation for creating the large military training facility, almost 2 kilometers below the warm salt lake soil.

Mood Board: Vegetation and Foliage

After all artificial caves was created, ITO engineers began constructing a complete ecosystem of plants, trees, simulated sun light, water etc. and huge weather systems was installed to support both the creation and maintenance of the caves vegetation; weather systems which secondary purpose is to simulate a whole range of environmental weather effects as well as complete day and night cycles to help mimic various real world environments during combat training.

ITO engineers and biologists additionally worked on technology that could simulate even small environment details and real life weather effects, which with the clear goal to perfecting controlled and simulated environments can be used to test almost everything.

Concept: Military Facility

ITO Training Grounds is one of ITO's largest military installations on Planet Earth, which besides Training and testing holds a command and medical center, several munitions-depots and an advance tactical evacuation facility as well as a few other hidden high-tech goodies.

Concept: Artificial Combat Caves

From the magic hand of Cotta comes the first interpretation of our all ideas: one of the artificial caves with huge stadium-type sun light projectors, modules and vegetation. Moving forward we'll try to nail a few different angles and setups .. and as soon as we feel that we're there, Cotta will begin working on establishing several versions of the images selling various weather configurations; Windy, Raining, Day, Night etc. which we are all SO looking forward to.

I haven't posted our module references (primarily from Mass Effect) but we're still working on nailing that easy configurable, modular, high-tech, clean training complex look and feel. This concept takes us closer and helps us all believe that we'll get there eventually and that it'll be something a lot of FPS gamers everywhere will just have to experience ... Only on InterstellarMarines.com! :)
