Game Update 1

published Saturday, 6 July 2013, 03:00 by ZPSBozar

All the waiting and hoping is over: we’re on Steam and we can finally focus all our time on actual game development!

We’re currently working on an update for next week, but we simply had to address the key binding issue that have prevented some of you from enjoying the game.

Today (a few hours past our bedtime) we’ve rolled out a minor update introducing custom key bindings and on request we’ve also spawned two brand new servers for stress testing intense 8vs8 combat training.

Interstellar Marines on Steam

Version: 0.5.1 (minor update)
Released: 6th of July 2013

-

New Features

  • ADDED: support for custom key/mouse bindings in menu
  • ADDED: support for multiplayer games with up to 16 players
  • ADDED: support for toggling rain in environmental states
  • UPDATED: so 5:4 and 4:3 screen resolutions are available in the video settings
  • ADDED: sprinkler prototype to Sandbox

Improvements

  • UPDATED: all input help to reflect the key/mouse bindings
  • UPDATED: the master server listing to refresh more often
  • UPDATED: the rain-detection on the marine (helmet + sounds) to be much more accurate
  • UPDATED: Arch, Rupture and Mainline with rain
  • UPDATED: rain FX on helmet with smaller droplets to make it more realistic
  • UPDATED: rain environment sounds on Rupture (thunder and foggy/grey environment states)
  • UPDATED: the Quit button so it's slightly more visible

Fixes

  • FIXED: "you can aim/suicide/toggle helmet while in menu"

Keep the great feedback coming!

Nice! Looking forward to larger updates. I can't express how excited I got when you said how impactful getting on Steam Early Access was. It will be interesting to gauge how the pace of development will change now.

And what's with updating in the dead of night? Showing some love to different timezones perhaps?

Love to see some of these issues (like keybinding) being addressed so quick. Can't wait to see what kind of updates you guys roll out next.

Might I suggest having the binding keys to more than just mouse button 1-3. Also, the offline(or online) single player mode like running man and bulls eye would be a welcome addition alongside the multiplayer selection.(credit to Mr. XSP.)

-I can tell a quality game by the amount of gliblet thrown at me. And that was a lot of gliblets.

Yeah I can honestly say this game shows more promise than any other game I've seen in a while. I do plan on upgrading to spearhead purely to support this company and I can't wait to see what you guys have in store for us. Though i do have to ask, is there going to be like a walking hotkey that makes less noise than running?

16 players is fun so far, also a little bit stressful. At least I got some frags this time ;)

still waiting for crouch and jump.

However here's some huge problem to be stated: The yellow triangles that show who's friend or foe are just bad. Excuse my using of words. But if a foe approaches you closely, you cannot determine whether its a friend or not, because the yellow triangle is way too high above him. Even more distracting is the moment when some of your team mates line up on different altitutes while fighting the enemy. Then yellow triangles appear above the foes - an optical illusion. can't figure out who is who. shoot all. get killed.

can you fix that up asap? why not set up different skin tones for the enemy team!?

In my opinion this game only has three flaws right now
1. Needs sprinting
2. Needs crouching
3. Lens flares, lots and lots of lens flares...

When will you add running man and bullseye to the steam client?

The map spawns really need to be balanced. After a few hours of play and mastering the levels knowing where the enemy spawns it does not become hard to camp one spot and cripple the other team. Perhaps use proximity spawning so If the enemy is camping they will spawn somewhere else. Also you can fall down in a cavern between the two bases in the one map that has the bridge in the middle. Either fill the holes or have it kill you when you fall, it is no fun having to hit K. The black outs are great!! Amazing feature!!! The tactical advantage of knowing the maps is huge though. Being able to maneuver when its dark just by the ambient lighting is too over powering against new players. I really like how loud the foot steps are but I hope they aren't loud when you are crouching. I can't yet tell if hitting enemies does different damage but if it does that is great. An idea: if you get hit in your right leg have your character walk with a limp, until you die or a least for a little, if you get hit in the arm then have reduced reload speed or increased recoil. The smallest details make the game more realistic and stand above others. I know you are working as hard as you can and the game looks outstanding for being in pre-alpha!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work!

P.s one thing you might want to lay out for the fans, if available, is long term plans for the game so we can get a feel for what you will be building in the long run. The synapses in the videos if seen that you have put out have been great at painting the Universe but i'm confused at why you call it a trilogy and what exactly your plans for prologue are in relative terms of the entire game experience. Perhaps you have already made it clear somewhere else on the forums that I just didn't see, in which case disregard this and keep on keeping on.

Oh one other thing you might want to look into; the glare when the sun rises on the open field maps can be detrimental to one side of the team. The visor should work as anti-glare, I mean if today's modern military is able to use sunglasses to combat glare I would think the soldiers of the future would be able to do the same.

Might want a clear indication in the graphics options whether they are ON or OFF as I often cant tell the differance

Also buying on steam... what does that give us? The prologue? Chapters?

This is what im hoping for in the next big update:
Bullseye and Runningman and all the other content on the website will be added to the steam client.
They will add a Campaign with the option of going solo or co-op. (For the Steam Client not the website).
Customizable guns with new ones too. Combat Knifes, Med kits, etc....
Oh and i was wondering why when you open your helmet the sound is slurred?
The Shadows look a BIT pixelated and i was wondering if you could fix that.
Add crouch and lay down.
And could you turn down the sensitivity of the gun when in aim mode? Its really hard to kill when your gun is flying everywhere. Lol.
In Multiplayer when you take your helmet off other people see you with your helmet on. Can you fix that? Thanks :D
Other than that the game is AMAZING for being in Pre-Alpha! I just cant wait for Beta!!
You guys are doing an amazing job and keep up the good work! I hope you listen to my feedback and hopefully you will correct some things. Keep up the good work!

Your Pal,
Noa

Alright put a good amount of game play in yesterday a few new ideas I have for multiplayer that ya'll might want to look into. To often i've found that someone get bored with the game and starts to grief the only way they know how, kill their team mates. My suggestion in this matter would to put their weapons on lock after killing a few team mates or have the option to kick the player from the server. The first allows an instant action with out other players needing an in depth understanding of console commands however it would allow him to grief in other ways 2 other ways. When its dark the greifer can follow around a teammate with his flashlight on illuminating his teammate and making him an easy target to get picked off. The second is just getting in the way of other players. I've noticed that you can not run through your teammates many times this can be fatal while trying to back up through a door way and a teammate blocks your retreat. I do understand that this would cause a serious problem if either was to fire while on top of one another effectively killing his/her teammate.
Now to talk about flash lights. The flash light can be very useful when the lights go out and obviously has its negative advantages of giving away your position to the enemy. There is a bug how ever that allows you to see the light through wall, including walls above you and below you as well. This can be very deadly for people who are unaware of this issue because they may just briefly turn on their flashlight to see the door way they are tying to go through but lets people who camp the door way to know someone is coming even if the light doesn't go through the actual door way but through the wall. By through the wall i do not mean that the light shines through the wall like it wasn't there but instead it illuminates the wall. Regardless this issue should be looked into.
Turning on your laser can be just as deadly. While it does not offer much in ways of offensive functionality it provides aggressors with knowledge of your position without even seeing you. Too many times have I been able to surprise people by knowing their position by tracing back their laser sight. Perhaps if you could make it invisible to the enemy or when you come out with night vision also come out with an infer red laser that you can only see with night vision. However, the second option still has the issue of being seen by the enemy and can still put you in a disadvantage. All the laser sight really does is tell you where your gun is pointed and where you are aiming. As we all know you are always pointing your gun in the middle of your screen and any gamer knows where that is and doesn't need a laser sight to tell him that. Using the red dot sight is much more effective at far and medium range then the laser sight. And you do not have ample time nor need it when the enemy sneaks up on you in close combat.

continued.... (it cut me off at 3,000 characters)

This brings me to my last suggestion/concern about the implantation of night vision. Currently what I have found that most people like about the game is the black outs. It offers a different style of game play than any other style of lighting. When night vision becomes available it will alter this style of game play. People will no longer be able to lurk in the shadows and use the darkness as cover to sneak behind enemy lines. Although night vision will offer its own unique style of game play it will take away from what makes this game different from many others of its kind. I do not know of a solution that would allow for both unique style of game play, they both have their intrigue to the player base and it will be sad to lose one to the other.
-Your humble Peon

I hope you will add running man and bullseye on steam by the next update and it would be great if you could make a story for a singel player whitch takes place in a spaceship or on another planet.
However, the game is so far so good, oh, no ,sorry. I mean AWESOME, but there is still some work to do. So I cant wait for the next update...

Is there ever going to be some kind of AI missions for singleplayer? I know of many games that have multiplayer like this for free. I definitely think that there should be some kind of campaign
