Deadlock 0.4.0 Battle Report

published Saturday, 28 April 2012, 03:30 by heks

A fresh copy of Deadlock is online with improved performance, new recoil, kickback and accuracy models on the SMG and an intense in-door map with AI SARA running the show. Yup, it’s time to jack in again!

Getting access to Deadlock

Deadlock version 0.4.0 is online and available to all Spearheads and Frontliners. This version continues our commitment to Open Door Development which provides access to Deadlock, while it’s being developed. Remember that you can get access to Deadlock and help speed-up the development of Interstellar Marines by upgrading your profile to Spearhead or Frontliner in our [Store].

Mission Summary

This time we decided to do something a bit different by adding our first in-door map called Operations, which is equipped to handle some intense mid-to-close range combat. AI SARA is running the Combat Training Program in which she’s simulating planned scenarios such as emergency, evacuation, backup power, and offline (pitch-black).

We’ve also added various systems to the weapon handling which gives a more refined experience. Gone are the days of perfect aim and no recoil.

Finally we’ve spent some considerable time hunting down “the performance monster”, the result of which have made our game much more smooth and stable, and playable on even semi-old gaming desktops/laptops, while still staying true to the vision of a completely dynamic game world. This is something we’re extremely excited about!

Watch the video and read on for more details.

  • FIXED: Overall performance

Next objective

We are very excited about our progress in Deadlock despite we’ve just implemented the most basic of what a AAA FPS normally consists of. We’ve received a lot of positive community feedback saying that we already managed to establish a thrilling and intense environmental setting and mood, which has confirmed us that we’re on the right track.

Some of our next focus areas is weapon handling, character movement and the kill/death experience which will improve and enhance the overall character immersion.

Stay tuned for more Deadlock goodness!

Known Issues

  • Sometimes footstep sounds won’t play for other marines
  • Other players can sometimes trigger a change in your local reverberation setting
  • Triple-clicking the fire button will sometimes trick the server into firing all your bullets (thanks Leowolf)
  • When joining a server the lights may not initialize properly until AI SARA changes the sequence
  • Once in a while a marine will spawn without a weapon in hand and other clients won’t see his movements. The only fix to this is to reconnect to the server.
  • If chat can’t be toggled with ‘T’ it can be due to using the development version of the Unity webplayer. Install the latest official webplayer.

Just to give some feedback:
PRO: The atmosphere is really nice, especially with the emergency lighting. The screams sound pretty cool and the overall darkness gives you a nice, claustrophobic feel.
Now to the CONS: Almost every new change is overdone. The footsteps sound like someone really tries to be heard, which doesn't make sense in a dangerous environment. ;) You should tone them down, careful players will listen to them, but they should not "jump in your face" and give away everyone's position too easily and on a too big distance.
The recoil is EXTREME. I thought all the time "Dude, these marines should get better weapons, if they have that weak arms... or learn to shoot." In other words.. the bullet spray is unrealistic and the recoil so overdone, it is just no fun to play. You get used to it, but at no point I had fun with it. It's even hard to shoot someone right in front of you, when you do burst fire, because you just can spray 'n pray.
The last big contra is that the whole design currently highly awards campers:
Footsteps give away your position on the whole map, you better not move.
Recoil is extreme, so when you have a nice corner, you have all the time to aim and be more precise.
Flashlights and lasers are completely obsolete, because it is just deadly to use them, there is almost no advantage. You're like a christmas tree and everyone knows your *exact* position.
The problem is not the light itself, it is the light cone / laser beam. It should not be visible, except you're in fog. The cone is like a giant arrow pointing at you, inviting everyone else to kill you - so you just can't afford to use any of the lights. Crawling through the complete dark is not really fun sometimes, because you know you HAVE lights, but they'll "kill" you.

And finally, here are my summed up suggestions to fix these issues:

- quieter footstep sounds with a limited, decreased range to be heard, maybe a sneak/crouch mode. reload sounds are just a tiny bit too loud, too.
- no visible lightcones and laser beams, except you're standing in dense fog. just the light itself and the red dot on surfaces. gives you sight, but does not directly point at you, so you don't give away your precise position.
- heavily decreased recoil / kickback and a slightly faster aim. you can take a look at the solution "ArmA 2" came up with, the precision is reduced when you are exhausted after you did sprint, then slowly turns back to normal.
- please create a little scoreboard and bind it to the TAB key, I keep pressing it, because I am so used to this.. :/

That's all for now, sorry for the long comment.

looks very cool. i love the detail you put into it. and i know it is still a lot of work in progress, but everything looks already great except for one thing: the enemy player's movement animation. hope you guys fix it!

Wow, I have to say that IM has come a long, long way since the last time I've logged in and read up on the development.

Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to play deadlock with other players running around but the open map is just gorgeous and visually delicious. The dynamic environment really does the show just how the different environments enhances the experience and provides varying 'themes' of play, such as night/pitch black fighting, having to see through fog and the emergency alarms on the indoor map.

From what I've seen and read up on so far, seems like the devs are taking this all the way along the right path.

Maybe I'm asking a wrong question, but why aren't there any realoading animations or the extremely well done weapon aiming that was already shown in Bullseye? You are working on new ones or does it have something to do with the new Unity engine?

This looks incredible, you've made the game even better since I saw it last, really well done to all of you.

I'm just wondering are you going t be at E3 showing the game? you should and let people have a go at the versus or if your working on the story right now maybe a bit of that aswell.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

New deadlock is really awesome, though i agree with whitewolf that recoil needs tuning but other than that it is awesome especially the atmosphere and lighting.

Oh yeah, one thing i learned don't try and kill heks with a crappy £5 mouse on your laptop - it really didn't end up well for me

+1 for the feedback from WhiteWolf, I would like to add that I still think the light sources are too weak, they should be really bright white, almost blinding. But that's nothing compaired to the recoil stuff WhiteWolf described :)

I think the addition of a walk key for softer steps would be better than reducing the sound of running. Running on metal in a heavy suit should be loud.

I still runs really unstable for me on my comp.

And, maybe we should change how many spearhead titles are available, 75,000 seems like a lot

Looking good team! Definitely moving in the right direction. I hope the gun play and feel of the weapons will get to the level that was shown in Bullseye. I really loved how it felt to shoot and reload in that 'mini-game'... hopefully it will get to that level in Deadlock.

Like the idea of a walk key for softer footsteps

Just a thought to make lights more necessary in 'blackout' mode' or to force their use in a way, you could add hazards (such as land sharks escaping due to no power?). I understand that developing a Co-op multiplayer is likely more difficult, however I feel that it would work well in IM. It could be a nice game mode to add later, in addition to the Co-op campaign. Something similar to what was done with multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, ie. hunting key targets or capturing intel, but better because it would have land sharks.

Anyway, it was a pretty quick thought... Feel free to expand on it guys!

Another thought... If you decide to tweak the lights to blind other players, take a look at Battlefield 3 and work off their experience. It is a good concept, but it can be a bit frustrating when you get hit in the face by a mini-sun. It was not as much of a problem i dark environments as much as when players were outside and the light was just as effective.

Essentially what needs to be done in this situation is that the light is much less effective in bright environments than in dark environments. Just food for thought.

It is looking great! I am spreading the word around. Keep up the good work!

This is shaping up very nicely I cannot wait until the enlisted men can join maybe deadlock 7.0?
and Radioflyer i really do agree on having land sharks escape during blackout, and the fact that light should be less effect in the daylight having been at the receiving end of them in battlefield 3 outside.

I want spawning fixed. I have had People spawn right behind me a d it gets annoying. Yeah when I spawn and get a free kill its cool but it really ruins the feel of the game when someone can just magically show up behind you. I have even spawned inside another marine! Please if anything fix spawning. Also I'd appreciate a hp bar.

The fire-all-bullets 'trick' works with just double click too, assuming they're fast enough.

Ok, this update is awesome, the atmosphere, the dynamics and the performance fixes were great. Creeping around in the dark with just the sounds to accompany was pretty creepy. Well, all was good until I decided to press random keys to find any secrets and hit 'k'. I practically had a heart attack when he screamed!
