Assault Rifle 03 Show Off in Unity

Tryout our new Unity Content Viewer and get up-close and personal with the "Assault Rifle 03" .. now that heks have made it possible to elegantly embed Unity content in Blogs and Articles.

It's no secret that one of our more ambitious goals for Interstellar Marines is to deliver a full tactical arsenal of 27 different weapons - 3 models in 9 weapon types. You probably already know the MeiKuy CE-6 SMG quite well... But we have a new baby we would like to present to you, and those of you who have found the easter eggs in the Xmas 2010 release (PC/MAC) know what I'm talking about.

So without further ado, I give to you:

We can't wait to give you this one to shoot with - but we're not there yet... Sorry! :)

The making of ...

The first iteration of the Assault Rifle 03 appeared in the 2006 Trailer when we all met IM Commander Lt. Reese for the first time (see it floating in his hands!). I think this variant was a block-out I made in Lightware 3D based on a rough concept I did back when we made the trailer.

Late 2008 our former Concept Artist Andreas Von Cotta-Schønberg started working on the assault rifle again; this time in collaboration with our former Lead Artist Anders Antoft and myself. After a few iterations back and forth we had the concept of the assault rifle as we know it today. And now Anders have finally modeled and textured it in Maya and made the initial import and setup in Unity.

Finally a real 3d Version of the Rifle ... had this for about half a year as wallpaper, simply love the design. Now if you could make the fire selector ambidextrous it would be perfect.

Bakis, its not true ambidex considering the fire select is still only for a right handed shooter.

The only ways this could be better are: 1. Built in Shotgun/launcher/flamethrower 2. Somehow it should have a drum mag and finally 3. The stock should be removable for faster aiming and mobility but increased recoil. Otherwise, sweeeeeeeet

I would change it how it looks by very little. The front grip would be really uncomfortable. I mean thumbs go upwards instead of inwards like a regular grip. In another words, if it was real, the pain would be unbearable after few shots...

Nice Art :)
Especially the little "Release" writing and that you are already able to see where the extension will be put. I like little details like that :)
But I also agree with madwolf, even though I'm not the guy who has a lot to do with weapons (shooting, etc.). The front grip was the only thing that was somehow irritating me.

I'm thinking the "RA-T {followed be some numbers/identifiers}". It reminds me of the scar in a way, made by a Belgian company so it would translate to assault rifle-tactical but the (presuming this is similar to how French works, sorry if I insult any Belgians) Belgian would be more like rifle d'assault hence the RA though I presume someone who actually speaks Belgian will correct me on this lol. I dunno, rat seems to suit it imo.

PS the thumb does go inward. Look at the side veiw, there is plenty of room for a thumb go behind the grip. Though it looks kinda strange, I think the gun is actually bigger than you are presuming and so it will work out, though it would be useful to see a gun/hand comparison or a model gripping it properly. I agree it may need a tweak or two though in that department. Does not look very ergonomic.

I'm trying to imagine how I would handle that weapon...
Obviously, you are supposed to pull the trigger with one finger, while the others would rest in the area below, maybe helping to pull the rifle to your shoulder while using the shoulder support. So far, so good.
Shoulder support itself seems not much anatomical, but I guess that's ok, since you seem to be wearing quite a sturdy armor.
My main issue is with the magazine well. I'm trying to draw it, so it's better to understand.

he picture is supposed to show where my strength goes when I pull this gun towards my shoulder compared to a rifle, that I use. As you may see, it is slightly drifting downwards, so it is quite easy for my hand to slip off this gun.
I don't know, if ITO trains it's marines to hold the weapon in a different way.... anyways, adding a grip (maybe an indentation for every finger) could solve that problem.

Using the unity web player to just showcase weapons like this in the web browser looks really good! I could seriously just have the fullscreen of the weapon as a screensaver.

This is looking pretty awesome. As a real world lefty who fires U.S. Army small arms, the only thing this would need is a spent-case deflector so lefties wouldn't get hit in the arm (which would still be distracting even if you had armor). Unless the bolt ejects the bullets straight out anyways. The fire select can be adjusted with the thumb of the firing hand (if you're a lefty), which in a way makes it better for lefties: no need to move the support hand! If there wasn't a grenade launcher, the magazine well would make a fine spot to pull back with the support hand. If you have a GL, hold onto that.. accuracy may be compromised, but that's OK because you can send explosives down range. The only thing I would want without any lower attachment is a rail cover on the bottom rail, because that's where I prefer to put my support hand.

"Ambidextrous" or not, I wonder if we get to choose how we hold the weapon in game?

"Ambidextrous" or not, I wonder if we get to choose how we hold the weapon in game?

I'm not a developer but I think that after you got the animations for the one hand it shouldn't be that hard to make some for the other hand. And there will be a option to adjust your character. Adding the possibility of choosing whether you are right or left handed would be an other feature I did never see before.
Please ZPS if it doesn't mean that much work, implement it in the game. I think all the left handed would love you.

have seen the rifle unity concept already on one of ur former artist's website , so no new under that sun . but really looking forward to see deadlock and it feels like this "state of the game" it's gonna be original.

a name for the rifle should be made by the marines, like "shark shooter" or "alien seeker" or a mix of short letters used fx LITA or LARA

looking forward to see the sniper which is the only weapon we haven't look upon yet :)

I personally really love the design however there are couple things that really bug me.

1) the gun should have a adjustable stock because when the marines hold it, the thickness on their armor forces the marine to hold it farther forward. Holding it farther forward really affects the guns stability when shooting and thus accuracy will decrease.

2) the size of the gun at the front is way too thick and bulky. If you guys could maybe shrink it down a bit it i think it would look better. (but of course i'm only estimating the size of the gun by looking at the pistol grip so i don't have an actually idea of how big the gun is)

3) there should also be an adjustable cheek rest on the stock because the thickness of the helmet that covers the entire face makes it really hard to look through the sights.

Either way this is just my opinion. I still love the design and i love what you're doing with the game! Now a days, there are rarely any game developers than actually care about their fans.

Love it guys. I especially like the "Unity Content Viewer" tool.

Integrate that into The Vault (and upgrade the vault to UNity 3.x and at the CTRs), and we've got something really special! Can you imagine being able to see each weapon in detail in the Vault, and to have their important aspects narrated over?

I'm lefty too, and it would be great to have option to choose - whether you are right or left handed.
In Splinter Cell and Uncharted you have this option and this makes this games even greather for lefthanded people I think.

I think the name of the gun should be named after the company that designed her in the game universe (and maybe some number after that). Maybe the same company thar designed the sharks?

The rifle could also have a nickname given by the IM veterans.

cool model! i can see it is modeled after the kriss submachine gun!

name wise, you could go for something personal, like :

William and Ben (WB) Operator B1

Conarl Industries (CI) TacticalAssaultWeapon (or TAW short) W30


or you could take the name MeiKuy as a base, and name it something like:

MeiKuy GS-67 AR (meikuy GroundSweeper-2367 Assault Rifle.


or, just go with a nickname, like:

Groundsweeper

Storm

Meikuy rifle

and so on!

I know its a little too old, but are goint to be a bayonet? Its aways a good way to save bullets, or when you just run out of then or your just wanna have fun (take for example the chainsaw bayonet from Gears of War).
Killing a shark with something like thar wold be wonderful.

I like it. It's unassuming at first, but has a nice silhouette. The gun nuts can go to town on fixing it up, I'm not one though.

On the topic of ambidextrosity (that's a fun word, even if it's not real), perhaps you can switch hands to get a better peek around corners? (a la Metal Gear Solid 4 or Rainbow Six)

its a great weapon, it seems that you did take the kriss smg and turn it into a powerfull assault rifle, i love it!!!. and the stock conection to the pistol grip under the thumb, that was a nice idea, it would be really oonfortable to shoot. great design!!!!

nice, I hope we can attach/detach the scope, I have a hard time seeing it´s use fighting melee noming shark...things in tight corridors while aiming down a scope, even if it be a low zoom one.

The "Cobra MPR" seems fitting to me. Cobras are menacing things and MPR stands for Multi Purpose Rifle.

As an enthusiast in weapons engineering, I am pleased with this rifle, but also slightly disappointed.

-The in-line hand grip design from the TDI Vector is genius, I hope the accuracy bonus one would receive from such a design in real life isn't completely sacrificed just to make the game more challenging (That move would satisfy some overachievers like myself, but at the cost of realism, and that'd be a shame for such an innovative title). That gives me an idea, though: Why not give players some adjustability on the rifles accuracy, like choosing more recoil for greater difficulty?

-The grenade launcher we've seen in the concept art is impressively compact, yet functionality is still very believable. How about options for underslung shotguns, chem-weapons, or even small Metal Storm-esque railguns? Or perhaps that's overkill. Hmm...

-The stock kind of weirds me out. I imagine modularity here was sacrificed so the weapon could have realistic weight balance, but couldn't that problem also be solved with a bullpup design? I'm sure you guys could figure a way to do that whilst keeping the above pros, plus that would cut down on the weight overall, and give us more room for barrel length.

-Speaking of barrel length, how extensive can we expect weapon customization to be in the game at this point? Are we going to be limited to external upgrades on the rails, or can we build the weapon itself with a wider range of parts, from receivers to stocks to barrels? If the latter option were pursued, it could tie in well with right vs left handed configuration, assuming you guys intended to go that way.

-While I'm pleased to see that the rear sight won't be interfering with red dots or scopes, flip-up capability on both irons seems smarter. But that's probably just me.

-I can tell you guys borrowed from the Vector design on this one, but I can't tell if you just kept the in-line grip, or if the Kriss Super V recoil redistribution action will be employed. Can someone confirm?

-Don't get me wrong, this weapon is absolutely beautiful, and while I think the Rhino shotgun would be more my speed, I'm itching to get behind this bad boy too! Keep up the awesome work, guys! But I don't need to tell you that, do I?

I love the look of this rifle! It looks functional, somewhat bullpup in design. I hope to see some heavy pistols as well, I have always loved Sci-fi heavy pistols (think Battlestar Galactica).
